看到網上不少中文文章說雨果是基督徒，我看來看去就沒看到任何人提供任何雨果是基督徒的證據，真不知他是基督徒的說法是怎麼得出來的？
我查了些有關雨果的英文資料，從這些資料里反而找到了他不是基督徒的證據。在 New World Encyclopedia （新世界百科）里有一段專門講雨果的宗教觀，我從中摘錄幾句如下：

Religious views
Although raised by his mother as a strict Roman Catholic, Hugo later become extremely anti-clerical and fiercely rejected any connection to the church. On the deaths of his sons Charles and François-Victor, he insisted that they be buried without cross or priest, and in his will made the same stipulation about his own death and funeral.
Due in large part to the church's indifference to the plight of the working class under the monarchy, which crushed their opposition, Hugo evolved from non-practicing Catholic to a Rationalist Deist. When a census-taker asked him in 1872 if he was a Catholic, Hugo replied, "No. A Freethinker." He became very interested in spiritualism while in exile, participating in séances.
He predicted that Christianity would eventually disappear, but people would still believe in "God, Soul, and Responsibility."

下面我簡要把上面這段翻譯如下：
雨果雖然被他母親教養成一位很嚴格的羅馬天主教徒，但後來他卻極端地反對教權，並強烈拒絕與教會有任何的關系。他兩個兒子死時，他堅持他們的埋葬沒有十字架沒有神父，同時在他自己的遺囑里，對他自己的葬禮也作了同樣的條文規定。
雨果後來從一個不行使教門的天主教徒變成了一個理性主義自然神論者。在1872年，一位調查者問他是不是天主教徒，雨果答，“不是，是一位自由思想者”。在他流放期間，他變得對招魂說很感興趣，並參與招魂術士搞的降神會（企圖與死人的靈魂交流）。
雨果預言基督教最終會消失掉，但人們還是會相信“上帝，靈魂，和責任”。

在論到雨果後來成為一個理性主義自然神論者這方面，wikipedia也有這麼一句：in later years settled into a Rationalist Deism similar to that espoused by Voltaire. 就是說，雨果後來成為了一個類似於伏爾泰所擁護和主張的那種理性主義自然神論者。從這些就可清楚地看見，雨果根本就不是一個基督徒，而是一個自然神論者。
